Do you want to become a truck driver? Getting a CDL license is the first step. A CDL, or Commercial Driver’s License, lets you drive big trucks for work. These trucks carry things across towns, cities, and even states. If you want to drive these trucks, there are some rules you must follow.

In this blog, we will talk about the eligibility criteria for getting a CDL license. We will keep it simple and clear. If you’re ready to start, Starline CDL School is here to help you every step of the way.

What Is a CDL License?

A CDL license is a special driver’s license. You need this license to drive big trucks and buses. These trucks are used for work, like moving goods and supplies.

There are three types of CDL:

  • Class A – For big trucks with trailers. Most new drivers get this one.

  • Class B – For buses and dump trucks.

  • Class C – For smaller work vehicles or vans with many passengers.

Age Requirements

To get a CDL, you must be the right age:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to drive a truck in your own state.

  • You must be 21 years or older to drive between states or carry special items like fuel or chemicals.

So, if you are 18, you can start training and working in your state. When you turn 21, you can drive across the country.

You Must Have a Regular Driver’s License

Before you can get a CDL, you must already have a regular driver’s license. This shows you know how to drive a car and follow the rules.

You Must Live in the U.S. Legally

To get a CDL, you must live in the United States legally. This means you must be a U.S. citizen or have legal papers that allow you to live and work here. You will need to bring proof like a birth certificate, green card, or passport.

You Must Speak and Read English

Truck drivers must speak and read English. This is important because road signs, job forms, and safety rules are written in English. You don’t need to be perfect, but you must understand the basics.

Health and Medical Check

To be a truck driver, you need to be healthy. You must pass a DOT physical exam. This is a checkup by a doctor who makes sure you are safe to drive.

The doctor will check:

  • Your eyes

  • Your ears

  • Your heart

  • Your balance

  • Your blood pressure

You must also be drug and alcohol free. If you pass, the doctor gives you a paper called a medical card. You will need this to get your CDL.

Clean Driving Record

You must have a good driving record. This means:

  • No recent DUIs (driving under the influence)

  • No serious tickets or accidents

  • No suspended or taken-away licenses

If you’ve had a few problems in the past, that’s okay. Just be honest and ask for help from the team at Starline CDL School. They will guide you.

Study and Take the Written Test

To start training, you must get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To do this, you must pass a written test. The test has questions about:

  • Driving laws

  • Truck safety

  • Road signs

  • How to check your truck before driving

At Starline CDL School, the teachers will help you study and feel ready. They make learning easy and fun.

Practice Driving a Real Truck

After you get your permit, you will need to practice driving a real truck. You must:

  • Keep your permit for at least 14 days

  • Practice with a CDL teacher

  • Learn how to turn, stop, back up, and park

Practice is important! It helps you feel ready for the real test.

Take the Final Road Test

Once you are ready, you will take the CDL road test. This test has three parts:

  1. Pre-Trip Inspection – You show how to check the truck before driving.

  2. Backing Skills – You back up and park the truck.

  3. Road Test – You drive on real roads with an examiner.

If you pass, you get your CDL license! Then you can apply for jobs as a truck driver.
